Chat with Lisa Friend

From time to time, we like to chat with the artists who perform at the Festival to get some personal insights and background that we can share. In April 2026, we spoke to Lisa Friend, who will be appearing on 25th June and asked about the relevance of the music she and her trio perform, and wht music, and indeed, the Bradfield Festival, mean to them.

Lisa Friend, UK flautist, is an international concert soloist, recording artist and masterclass teacher. An Ambassador for the King’s Trust and Children and the Arts, Lisa is frequently broadcast on radio in the UK and the USA and her latest album ‘An American Affair’ has received high critical acclaim. When the Lisa Friend Trio came to Bradfield in 2024 she established an intimate relationship with her audience, making for a memorable, emotionally charged concert.

What drew you to play flute in the first place Lisa? – who has inspired you most as a musician and performer?

When I was five years old, my mother took me to a concert at Lincoln Center while we were living in New York, where my father was the concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic. I was exposed to extraordinary music, and it was during this time that I first heard the flute in the orchestra. Instantly, I knew that I wanted to play the flute.

How can we encourage more young people to explore live music in all its forms?

We must continue to support and inspire young people by exposing them to a wide range of musical genres in schools. By introducing music that resonates with them and reflects their experiences, we can nurture a deeper connection and lasting interest. Presenting classical music in a fresh, engaging, and relatable way is essential to ensuring it feels vibrant and relevant to a new generation.

What do you take into consideration when you are planning or curating a concert programme?

It’s important to plan a musical program that appeals to a wide audience by incorporating a variety of genres and contrasts. A well balanced selection keeps listeners engaged and creates a dynamic experience. Above all, everyone appreciates a beautiful melody.

Are any of the works you are performing for Bradfield arranged by you or the Trio?

We like to arrange original medleys, and we will be performing the James Horner Medley featuring themes from Legends of the Fall, Braveheart & Titanic.

Your most exciting experience as a musician?

One of the highlights of my performing career was playing for and meeting Steven Spielberg at his Shoah Foundation. I even had the opportunity to chat with him about some of my favourite films and their soundtracks. I am a huge fan.

You have performed at Bradfield Festival before – what stood out for you as performers about appearing at Bradfield?

We loved performing at Bradfield and are delighted to return. The audience was both warm and engaging, and the atmosphere and surroundings are truly magical.

We thank Lisa for taking the time to chat with us.
